Service overview
What it is, who it's for,
and when to book it.
Electrical fault finding is one of the areas where an experienced trade electrician earns their fee ten times over. A methodical diagnosis with proper test equipment finds the fault in an hour; guesswork with a screwdriver and a spare RCD can turn a two-hour job into a two-week saga of replaced-for-no-reason components.
What the service is
Fault finding is the structured process of isolating exactly which circuit, cable, connection or appliance is causing a fault — using insulation resistance testing, loop impedance testing, thermal observation, and systematic circuit isolation — then repairing it and re-testing to confirm the fix.
Who it's for
Anyone with an RCD that won't reset, a circuit that's dead, sockets or switches that feel warm, lights that buzz, dim, or flicker, a burning smell near a fitting, or scorching around a plug or accessory. Also for landlords whose tenant has reported any of the above.
When it's needed
Immediately for anything smelling burnt, sparking, or visibly damaged. Within 24 hours for nuisance tripping that has become persistent. Within a week for lighting flicker, dimmer buzz, or intermittent socket issues that haven't yet knocked anything out.
Why professional help matters
Electrical faults are almost always the property telling you about a real problem — degraded insulation, a loose neutral, water ingress, an overloaded circuit, or a failing accessory. Ignoring them or replacing components at random rarely fixes the underlying issue and often makes it more expensive to trace later.
The cost of ignoring it
Small electrical issues
rarely stay small.
Every experienced electrician has stories of small faults that were left to escalate. The pattern is depressingly consistent.
What happens if it's left
- →A warm socket left in service can, over months, char the back box and set fire to the wall behind it — a fault that would have taken 20 minutes to fix.
- →Repeatedly resetting an RCD without diagnosing why it's tripping is gambling with a genuine earth-leakage fault that could otherwise shock someone.
- →A dead ring final circuit that gets 'fixed' by moving loads onto other circuits eventually overloads those circuits too, and every appliance is now on borrowed time.
- →Buzzing dimmers and flickering LEDs are usually a driver / lamp compatibility issue, but occasionally they're a loose neutral upstream — and a loose neutral upstream is a fire risk.
- →Delaying diagnosis on a rental property exposes the landlord to a genuine liability claim if a tenant is injured.
Common mistakes to avoid
- ×Assuming a tripping RCD means the RCD is faulty and buying a replacement online.
- ×Turning circuits back on repeatedly to 'see if it's stopped' — this can convert a manageable fault into a full circuit failure.
- ×Booking the cheapest hourly rate on a bidding site — fault finding rewards experience and proper test kit, not hourly discounts.
- ×Trying to isolate a fault by unplugging appliances alone — some faults are in the fixed wiring itself and won't clear until the wiring is tested.
Our process
A predictable five-step
process — every job.
No surprises, no vague timelines. You'll know what's happening at each stage and what comes next.
-
Step 1
Phone Triage
Two-minute call: what's happening, when did it start, what have you tried, is it safe to leave circuits off. Advice on isolation before we arrive, and a genuine ETA.
-
Step 2
On-Site Inspection
Physical inspection of the consumer unit, the affected circuit's likely accessories, and any obvious signs (scorching, damp, DIY work, recent alterations).
-
Step 3
Diagnosis With Test Equipment
Insulation resistance test to identify earth-leakage faults, continuity testing for dead circuits, loop impedance and RCD trip time testing for protection issues. Systematic isolation until the exact fault is located.
-
Step 4
Fix & Re-Test
Fault repaired — accessory replaced, cable re-terminated, damaged section replaced, whatever it takes. Circuit re-tested to confirm the fault is gone.
-
Step 5
Certification & Guarantee
Minor Works certificate issued where the repair is notifiable. All repair labour carries a 1-year workmanship guarantee.
Why customers stay with Electrust

Safety
Faults located and eliminated rather than reset around — no compromise on protection, no dodgy workarounds.
Longevity
Correct diagnosis means one repair, not a series of guesses. The fix stays fixed.
Cost Savings
£45/hr after the first hour keeps the bill honest. No parts fitted 'just in case', no upsells on unrelated work.
Reliability
Same electrician answering the phone tomorrow if the fault recurs — under a 1-year workmanship guarantee.
Peace Of Mind
Written record of the diagnosis, the repair and the retest, ready to hand to a future electrician, insurer or buyer.

and the situations that shape them.
The kinds of faults Electrust genuinely fixes week-in, week-out, and what causes them.
RCD / RCBO Tripping
Almost always an earth-leakage fault on a specific circuit. Common culprits: bathroom extractor fans, immersion heaters (element breaking down), old freezers, wet outdoor sockets, borehole pumps, damaged flex on garden appliances. Diagnosis by insulation resistance testing, appliance by appliance, circuit by circuit.
MCB Tripping (Overcurrent)
Usually a load issue rather than an earth issue: too many appliances on a ring, a shorted appliance, a nail through a cable in a wall, or a damaged flex inside a plug. Diagnosis by load analysis and continuity testing.
Dead Circuits
Loose neutral or line at a connection point somewhere on the circuit — commonly at a socket that's been previously replaced or at the consumer unit itself. Systematic disconnection and continuity testing locates it.
Warm Sockets & Accessories
Almost always a loose terminal creating resistance and heat. Requires the fitting to be replaced and the terminations re-made properly — never left in service, ever.
Lighting Faults
Flicker, buzz and premature LED failure are often driver / lamp mismatch, low-quality LEDs, or a wrong dimmer type. Occasionally a loose neutral upstream, which is always the first thing to test for.
Intermittent Faults
The hardest kind. Requires careful pattern-matching (time of day, appliance in use, weather) and sometimes staged diagnosis over more than one visit. Priced hourly and honestly — no attempts to invent a fix that isn't there.
FAQ
Straight answers before
you pick up the phone.
Still unsure? Call 07568 558466 — the phone's answered 7am–10pm, 7 days.
How much does fault finding cost?+
Standard call-out plus first hour of diagnosis is £60–£90 depending on distance from Gargunnock. Additional hours are charged at £45/hr. Materials, if needed, are extra at cost.
How quickly can you attend?+
Genuine emergencies (dead property, burning smell, exposed conductors) are typically responded to within 1–2 hours. Non-urgent fault finding is usually booked within 1–3 days.
Do you charge for the diagnosis if you can't fix it in one visit?+
You're charged only for time spent. If a fault genuinely needs a second visit (e.g. an intermittent that hasn't reproduced), that's discussed transparently and you decide how to proceed.
Do I get a certificate for the repair?+
Where the repair is notifiable under BS 7671, yes — a Minor Works Certificate is issued the same day.
Is the repair guaranteed?+
Yes — 1-year workmanship guarantee on labour. If the same fault recurs due to the repair, we're back at no charge.
How long will the fix last?+
A properly diagnosed and repaired fault is a permanent fix. Where the underlying cause is failing older equipment, that's flagged so you can plan its replacement rather than being surprised by it.
Do you handle out-of-hours emergencies?+
The phone is answered outside 7–10 hours for genuine emergencies. If it's a true safety issue we advise on immediate isolation and attend as soon as it's safe to do so.
Do you cover Edinburgh and Glasgow for fault work?+
Yes — the further-out call-outs are priced with the extra travel factored in, so you always know the cost before booking.
